In October the village council organized two planning meetings. The topic of the first meeting was the development of the village tourism in Degerby and the second meeting was about the future of the village and what we want from Degerby in the future.
On the first meeting that was held on the 22nd of October everyone agreed on the fact that Degerby has all the qualifications to be a popular sight for tourists: we have the perfect position by the mainroad 51 between Helsinki and Turku, we have a clear historical theme (the lease period of Porkkala), we have a lot to offer in the church village, where you can find small shops, a museum, some cafés, a restaurant and furthermore Degerby is a wonderful, idyllic old-time village with beautiful nature, large forests and cultivated fields and the picturesque recreation area Kopparnäs with its breathtaking views to the sea.
On Sunday 19th of October a Russian tourist group visited the Igor Museum in Degerby. One of the members of the group was a woman, who has visted us several times before, Marina Kalinina. She has visited the Porkkala area many times because she was born here during the lease period of Porkkala. Another visitor was Jelena Voronina, born 1951 in Leningrad, as her parents lived and served in Porkkala. Her father was a doctor and worked at the hospital close to the railwaystation in Siuntio. The family left Porkkala in 1955. Jelena has few memories of the time they spent here.
On Tueaday 7th of October classes 5 and 6 from Merituuli school (Finnish elementary school) visited us at the museum, which means that we've now had over 150 pupils at the museum this autumn. The children heard more about the evacuation from Degerby and Porkkala, which was carried through in 9 days exactly 70 years ago, about what the area looked like when the Finns returned 11 years later and how a child experienced these big changes. Furthermore the children learned about Finnish war children, i.e. children that were sent from Finland to Sweden because of the war or the consequences of the war.
During spring two representatives of the village council visited three different schools to tell the children more about the history of the Porkkala area. We visited Degerby elementary school and Källhagen school and Virkby gymnasium in Virkkala.
The traditional Farmer's market was organized again 27th - 28th of September on Mangs farm in Solberg. This years theme was slow food, country and local history - this year it's been exactly 70 years since the evacuation from Porkkala.
On Saturday morning the local growers showed up and started to unpack their cars. The weather looked promising.
